AICP HISTORY

Founding:

AICP was founded in 1972, initially in response to the formation of in-house production units by advertising agencies. The first meeting took place in Jay Eisenstatís office. In addition to Eisenstat (Myers & Eisenstat), a dozen others attended, among them: Herman Gerber (Gomes Lowe), Bill Gillette (Dick Miller Films), Dick Hall (Horn Griner), Jordan Kalfus, Ray LoFaro, Barney Melsky (Alton Melsky), and Stephen Steinbrecher (Steinbrecher & Ross). The group took out an ad on the back page of the industry trade publication, Backstage/Shoot, listing directors who only worked through independent companies. The strategy was effective, and the idea of agency production units faded away. Buoyed by their success, the producers agreed to continue meeting to discuss issues of mutual concern.

Bill Gillette remembers the early days

Today, the AICP represents, exclusively, the interests of United States companies that specialize in producing commercials in various media - film, video, computer - for advertisers and agencies. The association, with national offices in New York and Los Angeles as well as regional chapters across the country, serves as a strong collective voice for this $5-plus billion industry:

  • addressing its many audiences within the advertising community, business circles and government offices;
  • disseminating information;
  • developing industry standards;
  • providing education and programs;
  • facilitating dialogue both within its organization and among members of the AICP and their colleagues in the advertising community; and
  • marketing American production through the AICP Show: The Art & Technique of the American Television Commercial. Now in its 16th year, the AICP Show is an exhibit of the artistry and expertise of commercial filmmakers in the U.S.
