Serving as the meat in the AICP Week sandwich, the AICP Directors Lecture Series was a chance for the industry to hear from some of the preeminent minds in advertising today. Held at MoMA last Wednesday afternoon, the event was very well-received. This year’s event served as a revival of the popular series which ran regularly in the earlier days of the AICP Show.
A Tribute To Tony Scott

Before introducing the world to Maverick and Goose in "Top Gun," Tony Scott was your everyday brilliant commercial-maker. As co-owner, with his brother Ridley, of RSA Films, Tony laid claim to many esteemed commercials, including spots for Mountain Dew, Dodge, BMW, and an iconic Italian commercial featuring legendary actor Marlon Brando for Italia Telecom. RSA Films Director Jake Scott and David Lubars of BBDO will take a lead a retrospective on Mr. Scott's career and pay tribute to an industry icon.

The saying goes, "There's nothing less funny than talking about being funny." Well, this group sure bucked that trend. The panel includedd Steve Miller of @radical.media, who has a roster of hilarious commercials, including work for the always-funny Old Spice campaigns, Dos Equis’ “The Most Interesting Man In The World,” and the New York Lottery. A winner at last year’s AICP Show for Land Rover’s “Pathological Liar,” David Shane of O Positive boasts a robust roster of hysterical spots, including several from the popular ESPN “This is Sportscenter” campaign. If you don’t laugh at Frank Todaro’s work for Geico, Mastercard and FedEx, you were probably born without a funny bone. Susie Essman, actress/comedienne of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” fame moderated what turned out to be a funny and lively discussion.
We Are Storytellers

There's a lot that goes into being a director, but at its core, the job is one of a storyteller. We had one of the finest storytellers in the industry who took centerstage to discuss his craft. Jason Zada of Tool, creator of last year’s Next Awards sensation, “Take This Lollipop,” the Facebook-driven piece generated more buzz than any of the other work featured at last year’s presentation. This year, he reflected on his work and discussed the state of Digital/Interactive advertising and entertainment.
Sneak Peek Of The 2013 Young Directors Awards Shortlist
Francois Chilot, President, Commercial Film Producers Europe
As a special feature at the event, Francois Chilot, President of Commercial Film Producers – Europe, unveiled the shortlist for the Young Directors Awards, the winners of which will be revealed at Cannes Lions. The YDA is the only award specifically dedicated to beginners. As a result, the award has become a pioneer breaking ground for directors using new technologies and progressive techniques. The award is recognized as the most important fringe event of the Cannes Lions, attracting over 400 participants and over 900 spectators every year. This gives considerable exposure to the winning directors.
