THE AICP SHOW

The Art & Technique of the American Commercial

Next June, the AICP Show, The Art & Technique of the American Commercial, will commemorate its sixteenth year, with a screening at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, home of the worldís leading collection of modern and contemporary art. The Show, a one-hour compendium of outstanding commercials selected for excellence and achievement in various craft categories, is an unequaled celebration of the creative value of commercial filmmaking, and a dynamic presentation of art in the service of commerce. The connection between art and advertising is not new. Since its inception, the Show has been produced in partnership with MoMA, and as before, the work that will be honored by inclusion in the Show is given further tribute by becoming part of the permanent film collection of MoMA's Department of Film and Media. This mark of distinction is eagerly sought and highly coveted by the advertising and filmmaking creative communities.

The opening of the AICP Show is a gala black-tie event, featuring screenings of the commercial reel, followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner. Annually attended by over 2,000 cognoscenti in the art, advertising and production communities, the Show is usually "sold out" within a week when tickets become available.

Morning Program

The opening of the Show is always accompanied by a morning program, a showcase for individuals driving the state of the art. To see a list of the impressive speakers in the past, click here. In 2007, the morning program will focus on the honorees selected in the AICP Show category Advertising Excellence/Non-Traditional Campaign. Those responsible for producing the honored materials will screen their visual elements and explain the genesis of them, placing them in the context of the digital campaigns of which they are a part.

Show on Tour

Following the opening gala, the Show reel is included in the regular film schedule presented at MoMA and becomes part of the museum's permanent film archives, preserved for future generations. In addition, the Show goes on tour, mounting screenings at distinguished museums and cultural institutions in major cities within the United States and other parts of the world. These exhibitions and accompanying industry celebrations reach over fifteen thousand of the world's creative leaders.

Venues have included: the High Museum of Art and the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), SFMoMA in San Francisco, The Chicago Historical Society, Dallas Museum of Art, the Honolulu Academy of Art, The Institute of Art in Minneapolis, and the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Internationally, the Show has appeared in Tokyo, Sydney, Barcelona, London, Hong Kong, Prague, Madrid and Moscow, as well as at arts academies and advertising festivals in cities throughout Poland.

Call for Entries

The Call for Entries for the AICP Show is published each January and is available at that time at www.aicp.com. The deadline for entries is mid-February; late entries, which require written permission and a late fee, are accepted till the end of the month. Below, please find a listing of the categories of achievement honored in the AICP Show.

The annual debut, coupled with the subsequent international tour, not only has established the AICP Show as a benchmark for recognition in the industry and a treasured model used to study the state of the art, but also as an important legacy of our nation's advertising ingenuity and craft, rightfully known as "America's Reel."
