THE AICP SHOW

The Art & Technique of the American Television Commercial

On June 14, 2004, the AICP Show, The Art & Technique of the American Television Commercial, commemorated its thirteenth year with an exhibition at the epicenter of New York City's cultural landscape, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The debut of the Show-a one-hour compendium of outstanding commercials, selected for excellence and achievement in various craft categories-is an unequaled celebration of the creative value of commercial filmmaking, and is a dynamic presentation of art in the service of commerce. The connection between art and advertising is not new. Since its inception, the Show has been produced in partnership with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), which traditionally hosted the events surrounding the debut. An extensive renovation program at MoMA has brought the Show opening to The Met. But MoMA is still AICP's partner in this endeavor, and no less important than it has been in the past. As before, the work honored by inclusion in the Show is given further tribute by becoming part of the permanent film collection of MoMA's Department of Film and Media. This mark of distinction is eagerly sought and highly coveted by the advertising and filmmaking creative communities.

The opening of the AICP Show is a gala black-tie event, featuring screenings of the commercial reel, followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner, this year in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium and the soaring Temple of Dendur, and adjacent galleries. Annually attended by over 1,700 cognoscenti in the art, advertising and production communities, the Show is usually "sold out" within a week when tickets become available.

Lecture Series

The opening of the Show is always accompanied by a morning program. In 2004, we returned to the perennially popular Directors Lectures, which once again took their place in the Lecture Series. (Last year the inaugural AICP Brand Integration Honors, the first event to recognize the creative product that results from the fusion of advertising and entertainment, replaced the Lecture Series. This year, the Brand Integration Honors is being spun off into its own separate event.) The Lecture Series is a showcase for individuals driving the state of the art. Traditionally, renowned commercial and feature directors present their work, exploring the creative process and the career path that led to their status in the industry. Directors who have participated in the Lecture Series include Bryan Buckley, James Cameron, Leslie Dektor, Andrew Douglas, Bob Giraldi, Jeff Goodby, Jean-Paul Goude, Steve Horn, Tony Kaye, Kuntz & Maguire, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Errol Morris, Noam Murro, Marcus Nispel, Mehdi Norowzian, Mark Pellington, Joe Pytka, Ridley Scott, Peter Smillie, Barry Sonnenfeld, Charles Stone III, Tarsem, Traktor, and Kinka Usher.

The immense popularity of this event was impetus to expand the Lecture Series to include business leaders who have contributed to the advancement of marketing and advertising, and whose outlooks impart a greater understanding of the future of visual communications. In the past, speakers have included agency luminaries: Andy Berlin, chairman, Berlin Cameron/Red Cell; Cheryl Berman, CCO of Leo Burnett U.S.A.; Bruce Bildsten, associate creative director, Fallon Minneapolis; Rick Boyko, former co-president and chief creative officer, Ogilvy & Mather; Ewen Cameron, CEO, Berlin Cameron/Red Cell; Lee Clow, chairman/CCO of TBWA/Chiat/Day; Tim Delaney, executive creative director of The Leagas Delaney Group; Phil Dusenberry, chairman of BBDO New York; Cliff Freeman, chairman/CCO of Cliff Freeman & Partners; Steve Hayden, president of worldwide brand services, worldwide creative, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide; John Hegarty, chairman and worldwide creative director of Bartle Bogle Hegarty; Bob Jeffrey, president J. In addition, other groundbreakers who have addressed AICP are: Jeffrey Berg, chairman and CEO of International Creative Management; Myer Berlow, president of interactive marketing for AmericaOnline; Richard Costello, GE's manager of corporate marketing communications; Michael Davies, Executive Producer, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire; Charles Garland, Partner, 19 Entertainment Ltd. - Creators of "America Idol"; Steve Golin, CEO, Anonymous Content; Bob Greenberg, Chairman/CEO of R/GA Digital Studios; Lee Hunt, vice president of media and entertainment for Razorfish; Mark Kvamme, Internet pioneer and strategist, and partner in the venture capital company Sequoia Capital; James L. In addition, the Show goes on tour, mounting screenings at distinguished museums and cultural institutions in major cities within the United States and other parts of the world. These exhibitions and accompanying industry celebrations reach over fifteen thousand of the world's creative leaders.

Past venues have included: Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), SFMoMA in San Francisco, The Chicago Historical Society, Dallas Museum of Art, the Honolulu Academy of Art, The Institute of Art in Minneapolis, and the New Orleans Media Experience.
